The Southampton Learning Festival is booked to take place on Saturday 14th MAY 2011 at Southampton City Art Gallery and Central Library (Civic Centre, Commercial Road, SO14 7LW), after the great success it had in March 2010
People had a go at everything from knitting to circus skills;scrapbooking to basic IT skills, genealogy to jewellery making...just some of the informal learning activities available on the festival trail. The aim was to demonstrate what skills, knowledge and interests were being shared in the libraries and all around the city.
Amongst the individuals and organizations offering inspiration and advice on the day were some of the fantastic Let's Try learning exchange members, who encouraged adults and children to have a go at all sorts of things, including badge making; balloon craft; bread-making; carnival costume making; crochet; cross stitch; insect house making; mendi; percussion; rag-bag making; 'sketch school'; and to learn to play some traditional games (including the carrom board). There was also morris dancing, and stilt-walking to enjoy!
The Art House Cafeprovided musical entertainment (drumming, singing and didgeridoo) and arty activities and constructed a geodome; Butterfly FX used a green screen and digital wizardy to virtually take people out of this world!; the Scrapstoreshowed us how to make butterfly feeders out of things we usually throw away; and Learndirect guided people through some IT basics and offered an open surgery for any questions about computing. Solent MIND shared stories about how they and Awaaz Radio were involved with the Let's Try project, as did SAFE and Surestart members - who led many of the activities.
There were loads of fun (free!) things for everyone to enjoy! Southampton City Council hope to repeat this event in 2011 during Adult Learners week, so watch this space.
